About Snackster Sam

Snackster Sam was born out of a desire to promote better snacks that are safe and healthy for school-aged children.
The idea for Snackster Sam came after I received a newsletter from a newsletter listing peanut and nut-free snack suggestions. I felt the list could be improved, as it only included processed snacks. It took off from there.
The whole idea came to me suddenly,.. I saw his face, grabbed a paper and pen, and started drawing. My 3 year old daughter was nearby so I pulled her in and asked her what elements she liked. I finished the design on the computer and she would say yes or no to his features.
Once Snackster Sam was complete, I challenged family and friends on Facebook to come up with a name... Sam was the one Jenika picked, and then my husband came up with Snackster. We had it... Snackster Sam.
Once Snackster Sam was created, I approached Dr. Kathleen Hartford, and asked if she would create a list of snacks for Snackster Sam to promote. Dr. Kathleen Hartford has authored several books and has a line of nutritional supplements. Right away I thought this would be a great opportunity for her since she is passionate about fighting childhood obesity... In my opinion, her list is the best one available. I found others online that were exclusively organic foods or things only available at certain health stores. I wanted a list that was accessible to rural Americans.
Next, I approached the owner of the local grocery store, and he loved the idea right away. A sticker of Snackster Sam is located near all the approved list items. This makes the whole grocery store essentially a scavenger hunt to find the best snacks. It also empowers kids to find the best snacks on their own, without parents pushing it. Anyone can get their local grocer to implement Snackster Sam, get the tools here.
I'm very excited to announce a book is written and in the works of being available to everyone. The book helps explain Snackster Sam's mission and how parents can utilize his character.
Healthy Eating Doesn't Need to Cost More
I hear this all the time, how can I eat better when I'm on a budget? I get it! We are on a tight budget, too. But eating healthy does not have to be costly, and there are certain foods where you get more bang for your buck. For example, buy the whole carrots ($.99/bag) and peel and cut them at home versus purchasing baby carrots ($3.98/bag). We also only buy what’s in season and on sale. If you make the effort, you can eat healthy without it costing more.
